Mahjong Hand Checker

The Mahjong Hand Checker tells you which group your tiles form — Pair (2), Pung (3), Kong (4), Quint (5), or Sextet (6) — and whether that group is legal under the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) joker rule. Pick a tile, set the group size and joker count, and check instantly. It is a free tool and does not look up specific card hands.

Pick a tile and group size to begin.
This tool identifies the group type (Pair, Pung, Kong, Quint, Sextet) and checks it against the NMJL joker rule. It does not look up specific card hands.

About the result

  • Single (1 tile) and Pair (2 tiles) can never contain a joker.
  • Pung (3) and Kong (4) may contain up to that many jokers.
  • Quint (5) must contain at least one joker — only 4 of each natural tile exist.
  • Sextet (6) must contain at least two jokers.
  • Flowers and seasons each exist only once in the set, so groups of flowers larger than one aren't possible with natural tiles.
